Here's how a recoil starter works:
Pull the cord:
The user pulls the recoil cord. The cord is wound around a spring-loaded spool inside the recoil starter housing.
Spool and spring mechanism:
The spool is connected to a powerful spring, which, when pulled, winds up the cord and stores energy in the spring. When the cord is pulled and released, the spring unwinds, allowing the engine's flywheel to spin.
Engage the engine:
As the flywheel spins, it engages the engine's ignition system (usually via a one-way clutch or pulley), which turns and starts the engine.
Rope rewind:
Once the engine starts, the recoil spring automatically rewinds the cord back into the housing, ready for next use.
